Caelan Doris Makes Ireland Squad While Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has included skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish team for the fall matches, however Joe McCarthy is absent.
Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in the US on November 1.
Second row McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the first Lions match against the Wallabies in July.
Northern province forward Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash are also absent because of fitness concerns, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.
Leinster prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-man group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states new provincial pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".
After facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to coach the Lions tour to Australia.
In a largely familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with the two players set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected with Farrell deciding not to calling up Leinster's Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced group of midfield choices. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.
Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only new addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of his province's three league games this season and played in the second string's loss by England in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was included in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a international appearance.
Munster lock Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, and experienced Northern province lock Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions matches during the tour, is set to deputise for Doris should the captain does not regain full fitness in time to face the All Blacks.
The national team will assemble in the capital on Monday before traveling to the US on the following day.
